Martin Ramstedt (Dr. phil. habil.) has worked since 1998 as researcher and senior researcher at various international research institutions, inter alia at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden, the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, and the Käte Hamburger Centre for Advanced Studies "Law as Culture" in Bonn. He has taught social and cultural anthropology as well as cultural sociology at different European Universities, e.g. as Deputy Professor at the Radboud University in Nijmegen and at Martin Luther University in Halle, Germany, and anthropology of law as visiting professor at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Oñati. For many years, his research focused on the accommodation of Islamic and customary law norms and institutions in Indonesian state law. His new research involves an inquiry into notions of 'law' and 'justice' in restorative processes in the Basque country and a focus on anthropological and postcolonial approaches to the global access to justice problematique. He has published widely on religion, politics and law in Indonesia, legal and religious pluralism, as well as indigenous rights. He also works as an independent mediator and is co-editor of the book series "Religion and Society in Asia" at Amsterdam University Press.
