IISL - Call for Nominations for the position of Scientific Director 2018-2020
Letter of Benoit Bastard, Chair of the
Nominating Committee, of 1 February 2018
Dear RCSL Members, The term of the present Scientific Director (SD) at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law (IISL) in Oñati will end in August 2018. It is the customary practice that RCSL puts forward a candidate for the next SD to the IISL Governing Board, which selects the next SD. We have been appointed as a Nominating Committee by Masayuki Murayama, President of the RCSL, in order to search and propose candidates. Our committee is independent and will work on its own. It consists of Benoit Bastard (Chair), Lisa Webley and Pierre Guibentif. We would like to invite all RCSL members to nominate a SD candidate for the terms 2018-19 and 2019-2020. If you wish to do so, and have identified a scholar who is qualified for the position and willing to be nominated and serve, please send your letter of recommendation stating the reasons for your nomination and a copy of the candidate’s CV (which should include a list of publications) by March 1st 2018 to Benoit Bastard ( benoitbastard1@gmail.com ), chair of the Nominating Committee. The Committee will examine your nominations and also work to “dig out” candidates for the next SD. We will select three of the nominated candidates – whether they are nominated by RCSL members or by the Committee itself – and rank them in order of their priority. This selection will be announced to all the RCSL members and the RCSL Board by 12 March 2018. The selection will be also checked by the Basque foundation for scientific research (IkerBasque), as it will be involved in funding the position of the SD as a research fellow. The RCSL Board will then consider the choice of the Nomination Committee and decide on the final candidates by 20 March. This decision, together with the report of IkerBasque Foundation, will be sent to the IISL Governing Board, which will select the next SD at its meeting of 22-23 March 2018. You will find a description of the function of the SD written by Manolo Calvo and Carlos Lista, both former Scientific Directors, and a profile of the SD by Adam Czarnota, also a former SD, on this site http://rcsl.iscte.pt/rcsl_iisl_SD_profile.htm The Scientific Director of the Oñati IISL will occupy the position of an IkerBasque fellow and Distinguished Professor of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He/She will have an office in the Institute and free lodging in the Antia College Residence of the IISJ. The maximum age at the time of application is 67, since the UPV/EHU cannot hire any person aged 70 or more. If you have further questions about the position of the SD, please contact Vincenzo Ferrari ( ferrari@iisj.es ), the current SD. For your questions about the Basque country, please contact Joxerramon Bengoetxea, ( joxerramon.bengoetxea@ehu.es ) and/or Manolo Calvo ( mcalvo@unizar.es ), and for your questions about the administrative status of the SD, please contact Maite Elorza Plazaola (m.elorza@iisj.es). The IISL in Oñati is an extremely important institution for RCSL, and its most relevant achievement over its 56 years of existence. Therefore, we would like as many RCSL members as possible to actively participate in deciding on the next Scientific Director. At the same time, we would like to make the procedure as transparent and open as possible to all the RCSL members. We would be grateful if you would take some time to think about a candidate for the next Scientific Director. Thank you for your cooperation! With best wishes, Benoit Bastard, Lisa Webley, Pierre Guibentif Paris / Lisbon / London / Oñati, 1 February 2018
